What Constitutes Ragging?

As per UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging, 2009

Prohibited Activities

Any act of ragging constitutes one or more of the following:

Any conduct causing physical or psychological harm or apprehension to students

Teasing, abusing, or playing practical jokes on junior students

3

Asking students to do any act which causes embarrassment or mental trauma

4

Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden

5

Physical abuse including assault, causing bodily harm

6

Verbal abuse, indecent gestures, and obscene behavior

7

Intimidation or criminal intimidation

8

Discrimination based on caste, religion, region, or appearance

9

Senior students exploiting junior students to do their personal work

10

Any form of cyber bullying through social media or online platforms

Punishments for Ragging

Strict action will be taken against those found guilty of ragging

Minor Offenses

  • Suspension from classes and academic privileges
  • Withholding scholarships and other benefits
  • Debarring from representing university in events
  • Withholding results

Major Offenses

  • Expulsion from the university
  • Debarring from admission to any other institution
  • Fine up to ₹25,000
  • Rustication from the institution

Criminal Offenses

  • FIR and legal proceedings under IPC
  • Imprisonment up to 3 years
  • Cancellation of admission
  • Permanent blacklisting from all educational institutions
